Violence Against Women

Métis and other Aboriginal women are much more likely to be victimized by abuse and violence by strangers or family than non-Aboriginal women.   Victimization of Métis women was not part of traditional Métis culture.  Historical factors including the influence of churches, colonization and the marginalization of the Métis culture through government policies contributed to the relegation of the role of Métis women in their communities over many generations.  Other factors, including sexist and racist attitudes towards Aboriginal women and societal indifference, have exacerbated the plight of Métis women.

WMN will work in partnership with other stakeholders, including the federal government and the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC), to raise awareness of, and develop policies and strategies to address, this important societal issue.
