FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa – February 12, 2026 – Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO) is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two young lives in Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg, Quebec.
We mourn the children whose lives were taken far too soon and hold their families and community in our thoughts during this time of profound grief. The loss of young lives leaves an ache that is felt across the entire community and beyond.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy for Kitigan Zibi,” said Melanie Omeniho, President of LFMO. “Our thoughts are with the family, community leaders, and all those who are grieving. We honour the lives of these children and stand in solidarity with the community as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”
LFMO stands in solidarity with Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg and with all First Nations communities facing grief and trauma. LFMO also reaffirms its commitment to addressing domestic and family violence and to advancing culturally grounded supports that protect women, children, and families in Métis, First Nation, and Inuit communities.
We call for sustained collaboration and investment to ensure children are safe, families have access to prevention and crisis services, and communities are supported in healing from violence and trauma.
