Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak Stands Behind Indigenous Appeals for Climate Action at COP 29

OTTAWA, ON – Last week the COP 29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan came to an end after days of debate over financial support for climate infrastructure.

The International Indigenous Peoples’ Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC) and Indigenous delegates from across the globe appeared at the summit to participate in discussions about the equitable distribution of funding to implement climate change reforms such as more sustainable infrastructure.

Generally, Indigenous communities are more likely to feel the impact of climate change on their  . Deteriorating ecosystems and altered migration patterns can affect dietary habits, methods of transportation, cultural traditions and ceremony, and access to essential resources such as clean drinking water. Because of this, Indigenous voices have been among the loudest where it concerns climate.

Currently, very little of the funding allocated to nations for the purpose of combating climate change is distributed to Indigenous communities, who have been the preeminent leaders in driving climate action. In solidarity with our Indigenous brothers and sisters worldwide, Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO) stands behind the Indigenous delegates’ and the IIPFCC’s call for Indigenous inclusion in the new collective quantified goal on climate finance (NCQG).

“Indigenous peoples have a deep, inextricable connection to the environment. We have been stewards of the land since time immemorial, and our knowledge about the earth is informed by millennia of living on and caring for it. Having an effective, inclusive strategy to fight climate change means meaningful consultation and collaboration with Indigenous peoples,”

– Melanie Omeniho, LFMO President
