LFMO Congratulates the Manitoba Métis Federation on the Introduction of Historic Self-Government Treaty Legislation in the House of Commons

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON  February 12, 2026 —  Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO) congratulates the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) on today’s introduction of Bill C-21 in the House of Commons to implement its historic self-government treaty with Canada, signed in November 2024.

If passed, Bill C-21 will give effect to the Red River Métis Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Treaty. This first-of-its-kind treaty formally recognizes the MMF as the government of the Red River Métis and affirms Métis self-government through lawmaking authority over citizenship, elections, and internal governance. The treaty represents an important first step in addressing long-standing governance issues rooted in the 1870 Manitoba Act and advances the recognition of Métis rights and self-determination.

LFMO celebrates the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) on the introduction of legislation to implement its historic self-government treaty with Canada. We strongly support this legislation, recognizing its significance for Métis self-determination and governance. LFMO remains committed to lifting up Métis women, as well as supporting Métis youth and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, advancing their interests, leadership, and well-being.
