Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO) is proud to announce that its President, Melanie Omeniho, is a recipient of the 2026 Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case. The award recognizes her longstanding leadership, advocacy, and dedication to advancing equality and improving the lives of Métis women and girls.
Established in 1979, the Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case honour Canadians who have made outstanding contributions to advancing gender equality. The awards mark the historic 1929 decision that recognized women as “persons” under the law, opening the door to their full participation in public life.
For many years, President Omeniho has been a strong and steady voice for Métis women at the national and international levels. She has championed Métis women’s rights, safety, health, and economic security, and has worked to ensure that Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people are seen, heard, and included in the decisions that affect their lives.
“I am deeply honoured to receive this award, but it does not belong to me alone. It belongs to the generations of Métis women who carried our families, our culture, and our Nation forward, often without recognition. I accept it on behalf of every Métis woman and girl who deserves to live safely, freely, and with dignity.” – Melanie Omeniho, President, LFMO
“President Omeniho’s leadership has shaped what it means to advocate for Métis women in this country. This recognition is well deserved, and we are proud to celebrate her alongside our board members and partners.” – Lisa Pigeau, Director of Intergovernmental Relations, LFMO.
