Economic Prosperity, Housing and Education

Historically, Métis women were significant contributors to local and national Métis and Canadian economies. Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak prioritizes opportunities and supports for Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ folks to participate in economic development and entrepreneurship initiatives.

As part of this, LFMO advocates for and promotes access to education and training opportunities, including post-secondary education and leadership training programs for Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ folks.

Additionally, LFMO working steadily to identify and close housing gaps experienced by Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ folks through community-driven research.

Strategic Recommendations

LFMO prioritizes economic prosperity of Métis women in several ways, including the following strategic priorities:

Raising awareness among Métis women of economic development supports and opportunities;

Ensuring the priorities and needs of Métis women are included in federal economic development funding and initiatives through the application of a Métis-specific GBA+;

Connecting Métis women with specific national and regional economic development funding opportunities; and,

Supporting skills development through training and education to improve the economic prosperity of Métis women.

Education

Currently and historically, there have been a number of challenges facing Métis women with regard to accessing and completing education, including a lack of childcare and transportation as well as the inability to secure funding for Métis women’s post-secondary education. LFMO is committed to advocating for the reduction and removal of barriers to education and training for Métis women and youth.

We continue to work to ensure substantively equal access to education and training that is culturally safe and accessible for Métis women and youth.
