Health Policy Capacity
This project focuses on addressing critical health gaps for Métis women and and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin through culturally relevant, intersectional gender-based analysis. LFMO engaged Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin in discussions on anti-Indigenous racism, midwifery, mental health, and wellness, while actively contributing to Métis-specific health frameworks and policies.

With funding to increase capacity, Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO) undertook a comprehensive approach to informing health matters specific to Métis women through intersectional, culturally relevant Gender-Based Analysis (GBA+).
Addressing significant gaps identified in an environmental scan, the project expanded focus areas to include smoking and vaping among youth, healthy aging, addictions, mental health, violence prevention, and wellness connections to land. LFMO’s engagement with Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin brought critical insights into anti-Indigenous racism in healthcare, reproductive health, and midwifery, which were integrated into national health discussions and policy advocacy.
Increased funding will strengthen LFMO’s ability to address health issues specific to Métis women, Two-Spirit, and gender diverse people, addressing gaps caused by funding and policy limitations.
Key priority areas identified through engagements sessions include smoking/vaping (particularly among Métis youth), healthy aging, addictions, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, STBBI prevention, birth alerts, and violence prevention, with additional areas expected to emerge through further engagement.
