Historical Perspectives of Métis women
Métis women have been integral to the development of the Métis people, serving as life-givers, knowledge keepers, and equal partners in political, social, and economic life. Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO) honors this legacy by promoting Métis women’s leadership and advocating for the revitalization of cultural knowledge and empowerment of future generations.
Métis women have been respected as traditional knowledge keepers and leaders, contributing significantly to the political, social, and economic development of the Métis people.
Despite the impacts of colonization and policies like residential schools and the Sixties Scoop, Métis women have fought to preserve their cultural knowledge and identity for future generations. Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO), founded in 1999 and incorporated in 2010, builds on this legacy by enhancing the social, cultural, and economic well-being of Métis women, youth, and gender-diverse individuals. LFMO promotes the leadership of Métis women locally, nationally, and internationally, ensuring their voices are central to the revitalization of Métis culture and the empowerment of their communities.
LFMO acknowledges the pivotal role that Métis women played throughout history in nurturing and raising Métis families, recognizing the invaluable experiential knowledge, resilience, and wisdom they gained through this essential role.
It emphasizes the profound contributions Metis women have made in preserving Métis culture, traditions, and community values, underscoring the importance of their leadership and influence in shaping future generations.
