The LFMO’s mental health and wellness initiative aimed to identify and address the mental health priorities of Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+kin through a combination of a nationwide survey and virtual engagement sessions.

The project revealed a pressing need for culturally grounded approaches to mental health, emphasizing the effectiveness of informal, community-based practices over traditional Western clinical models. By advocating for culturally relevant initiatives, LFMO is paving the way toward greater resilience and mental health equity for Métis people.

LFMO’s Health Forum: Claiming Métis Wellness, held June 3-6, 2024 in Ottawa, hosted a session on creative wellness with 83 Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ attendees, featuring a speaker on Reclaiming Métis Identity through the Arts and cultural art sessions led by Métis artisans, emphasizing strengths-based, holistic, and culturally relevant mental wellness.
