MMIWG2S+ Database Project Partnership
On May 5th, 2025, Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO), the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) and 2 Spirits in Motion Society (2SiMS) announced a collaborative, Indigenous-led data project focused on Missing and Murdered First Nations, Métis and Inuit Women, Girls, Two Spirit and Gender-diverse Peoples.
This collaborative data project seeks to enhance public understanding of MMIWG2S+ crisis, strengthen advocacy and highlight the lack of action from Canada since the National Inquiry.
LFMO is part of two MMIWG2S+ database projects: one focused on Métis-specific data collection and analysis, and another as part of a national, Indigenous-led partnership to build a comprehensive database of cases.
LFMO is involved in two MMIWG2S+ database projects.
The first is a Métis-specific data collection and analysis which has been led by our MMIWG2S+ Initiatives Director since November 2023. This involves using secondary, publicly-available data to document, map, and identify trends in relation to missing and murdered Métis women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people. To date, more than 200 cases have been identified from 1885 until 2025. Preliminary research results were shared at LFMO’s Spring Policy Forum in March 2025 and with the MMIWG2S+ Community Advisory Committee in April 2025.
The second project involves an Indigenous-led Database Project partnership aimed at creating a comprehensive, nation-wide database tracking missing and murdered First Nations, Inuit, and Métis women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people. The partnership is led by Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada and includes LFMO, the Ontario Native Women’s Association, and 2 Spirits in Motion Society.
The partnership will build organizational capacity, strengthen our advocacy efforts, and drive policy development and systemic change.
The database will focus on cases from 2015-2025 and utilize the experience of CDCI Research and Wampum Records, who built an online data repository for the National Centre for Truth & Reconciliation.
