On August 9, 2021, the Canada–Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak Declaration was signed by President Melanie Omeniho and the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations.

This historic agreement formalizes a partnership between the Government of Canada and Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO), the national organization representing Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin. The declaration is a commitment to advancing the priorities of Métis Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin, ensuring their safety, well-being, and inclusion through a culturally informed, intersectional gender-based analysis (GBA+) framework. It underscores the importance of a nation-to-nation relationship to address systemic challenges and promote equity for Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin.

The declaration strengthens the nation-to-nation relationship between the Government of Canada and LFMO, ensuring a coordinated approach to addressing Métis women’s and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin’s priorities.

Using a Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) framework, the agreement emphasizes the importance of culturally grounded and intersectional policy development.

This partnership prioritizes the safety and well-being of Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin by addressing systemic issues and identifying specific policy areas for federal action.
