Sexual and Reproductive Health

The Métis Women’s Voices in Sexual and Reproductive Health project advocates for culturally safe and informed sexual and reproductive health care for Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin. By identifying healthcare gaps and recommending solutions, the initiative promotes health equity and supports community-driven health decisions.

The Métis Women's Voices in Sexual and Reproductive Health project aims to address disparities in access to sexual and reproductive healthcare for Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin.

This initiative emphasizes the importance of culturally safe and informed health choices, advocating for systemic changes to improve health equity. By engaging Métis people, the project seeks to identify challenges and propose actionable recommendations to empower community-driven health decisions.

In February 2024, LFMO distributed an online survey to further explore sexual and reproductive health priorities identified in the December 2023 virtual engagement sessions with Métis women and gender-diverse individuals, focusing on access to healthcare, culturally safe care, intersectional health needs, and bias, stigma, and discrimination.

Participants highlighted challenges related to limited resources and support for sexual and reproductive health needs, feeling misunderstood and marginalized in healthcare settings due to a lack of cultural understanding, and experiencing stigma and discrimination based on their Indigenous identity, gender identity, and age, all rooted in a lack of culturally safe and intersectional healthcare for Métis people.

Participants emphasized the need to improve access to sexual and reproductive health services, including screenings, care, testing, treatment, and products, highlighting the importance of topics such as abortion, contraception, family planning, fertility care, gender-affirming care, gynecological health, maternal health, menstrual equity, pap testing, sexual education, and more.
