United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People
Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO) supports ongoing initiatives related to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) to promote equity, self-determination, and cultural integrity for Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin. Through engagement and consultation, LFMO has submitted 13 action plan measures to advance reconciliation and ensure Métis Women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin’s perspectives shape Canada’s implementation of the UN Declaration.
The ongoing projects by Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO) related to the Implementation of the National Action Plan for United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act focuses on promoting equity, self-determination, and cultural integrity for Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ kin.
These initiatives ensure that the unique needs and voices of these communities are central to the development and implementation of Indigenous rights policies in Canada. As part of these efforts, LFMO has prepared a report summarizing its consultations, engagements, and 13 proposed action plan measures for the Government of Canada. This work aligns with the broader UN Declaration Action Plan, a vital step in advancing reconciliation, fostering nation-to-nation partnerships, and strengthening the cultural, social, and political rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Through these measures, LFMO strives to improve outcomes and foster inclusion, respect, and recognition for diverse Métis identities.
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) aims to protect the rights of Indigenous peoples globally.
The UNDRIP focuses on addressing key issues – such as self-determination, land, culture, and the right to free, prior, and informed consent – while recognizing the rights of Indigenous peoples to education, participation, health, and the preservation of their cultural practices, and calls for the restoration of land, non-discrimination, and protection from forced assimilation.
The 13 recommendations from the “”Métis Women and Gender-Diverse Peoples Perspectives on the National Action Plan to Implement UNDRIP Act: Consultation and Engagement Report”” are guided by knowledge from literature reviews, ongoing engagements with Métis women and gender-diverse kin, and participation in national dialogues.
